Generator vs Inverter

If you have considered purchasing and installing a generator or inverter for home or office use but are not sure which of the two would be the best option, then here are a few facts, pro's and con's to consider.

What is a generator, and how does it work?

A fuel driven generator is a device(the main components of which are an engine, fuel system, alternator and voltage regulator) that generates and turns mechanical energy into electrical energy. "In home generators" or those intended for commercial use are powered by diesel or petrol.

How a generator works is that a combustion engine burns fuel which rotates a motor and generates electricity by producing alternating magnetic fields inside the generator. The output of alternating current(AC) can be used to power appliances etc.

What is an inverter, and how does it work?

An inverter is a device that changes or inverts DC(direct current) into AC(alternating current) which is the type of electrical current needed to run household appliances.

An inverter works by being connected to a source of electrical energy that charges up it's batteries. As soon as this main supply of electricity is cut off the inverter will power on. The direct current(DC) from the inverters batteries is converted into alternating current(AC), and this output of electrical current can be used to power your appliances etc.

Quick Comparison Of Generators and Inverters

GENERATORS

Operation: Generators have a fuel powered engine that generates mechanical energy which is converted into electrical energy. Generators are noisy and cannot be stored indoors.

Cost: Although noisier than inverters, generators are more affordable to buy than inverters, and spare parts are readily available and inexpensive.

Electricity Storage: Generators do not store energy. They need to be started each time and there is a lag time between start up and receiving power.

Weight/size: Compared to inverters, generators are larger in size and heavier. Smaller generators are made portable by having wheels attached to them.

Maintenance: Much like a motor car, generators have moving and consumable parts that need to be maintained and replaced periodically. This obviously increases the cost of ownership in the long run.

Advantages: Generators have a large fuel capacity, can produce large amounts of power for extended periods of time and can power large appliances.

Disadvantages: Generators are noisy, produce pollution, have high maintenance costs, require inconvenient fuel storage, produce a fire hazard,  and are not compatible with solar panels.

INVERTERS

Operation: Inverters store power in batteries and change DC(direct current) into AC(alternating current). Inverters produce no noise and can be stored indoors.

Cost: Inverters are more expensive to purchase than generators. The higher price is justified by factors such as quiet operation, compact size, efficiency and smooth power flow.

Electricity Storage: Inverters store electricity in their batteries and power on immediately when the main supply is cut off, so there is no interruption in electricity supply.

Weight/size: Inverters are compact in design, smaller and lighter than generators. They can be connected to more batteries making it less convenient to move.

Maintenance: Inverters have no moving parts and require very little maintenance.

Advantages: Inverters are compact, have low noise and zero pollution output, have low maintenance costs, produce smooth power output for sensitive electronic appliances, provide uninterrupted power supply and are compatible with solar products.

Disadvantages: Depending on the requirement and choice of inverter, their initial cost is more expensive than that of a generator, cannot run for extended periods of time and cannot power larger appliances.
